  • Molecular switches reversibly transform between their stable molecular structures, which are induced by the environmental stimuli, such as light, temperature, pH, electricity, and so on.

  • Photochromic molecules, one kind of molecular switches, response to light of specific wavelength with changes of structure, color, energy level, absorbance, dipole moment, and etc.

  • The photochromic molecules are utilized in organic electronics with reversible property change, especially switching of energy level between two stable states.

  • For instance, in the organic electronics, the photochromic molecules were introduced to organic field effect transistor to provide the third state in addition to on-off states, and to organic light-emitting diode for patterned luminescence.
