Molecular switches reversibly transform between their stable molecular structures, which are induced by the environmental stimuli, such as light, temperature, pH, electricity, and so on.
Photochromic molecules, one kind of molecular switches, response to light of specific wavelength with changes of structure, color, energy level, absorbance, dipole moment, and etc.
The photochromic molecules are utilized in organic electronics with reversible property change, especially switching of energy level between two stable states.
For instance, in the organic electronics, the photochromic molecules were introduced to organic field effect transistor to provide the third state in addition to on-off states, and to organic light-emitting diode for patterned luminescence.
